“Unless you become as little children, you shall not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.” Matthew 8:3
“When you shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say: ‘We are unprofitable servants.’” Luke 17:10
Pride is far more stupidity than a sin. It is an inability to grasp the facts, to realize our small creaturely status and helplessness. It is the failure to see that our most magnificent achievements are no more than the success of an ant handling a rather larger bit of straw than that manipulated by another ant. This is why spiritual specialists insist that humility is the same thing as self-knowledge. When you once see the point, you realize something of what you are up against: God. Then you do:
Feel tiny and helpless as a baby. You do become a little child and are glad to be so.
- Become generally aware that self-abandonment, losing your own separate life and point of view, is the fullest, richest life.
- Perceive the painful and obvious fact that performance which others may kindly think is so remarkable in you is really less than nothing at all.
Nothing is discovered. Everything is revealed.
