“The very operations one would expect of Him who was so full of life that when He wished to die, He had to “borrow death from others.” Athanasius, On the Incarnation
Jesus had several reasons for coming to earth:
(1) To build the church (notice all the time that He poured into His disciples)
(2) To reveal the nature of the Father’s heart
(3) To bring atonement through death on a cross.
There are certainly many other reasons one could think of.
Man (men and women) is in a fix. By ourselves, we can’t live the perfect life and therefore we are cut off from the source of life, love, freedom and the future. We need a rescuer.
God was in a fix. He loved His creation (men and women) and yet His Perfect Justice required the punishment of death. God’s love was so great He was willing to die. But as the everlasting Spirit – He could not die.
So God “borrowed” the body of a mortal, the man we know as Jesus, the 2nd person of the Trinity. He really was a man for 33 years. 100% man. 100% God. Now with a human body, God could die for His people and be raised again- thus opening the door for us to fellowship with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit for eternity.
What are other reasons that you can think for the Incarnation?
